SUMMARY

 The Institute of Architecture and Urban & Spatial Planning of Serbia (IAUS) was established in 1954 as part of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. As a result of the Republics’ Executive Committee declaration no.N/303 of 13.05.1961 it was proclaimed an independent research Institute. The scientific researches and expert work of the Institute is organised within the three centres:

1)       Architecture and Dormitory

2)       Urban Planning and Regional Development

3)       Information, Publication and Consulting

The Institute comprises 60 professional employees (40 of whom have outstanding scientific and professional qualifications) and maintains close ties with a large number of consultants - experts in their fields.

It covers the following scope of activities:

1)   Scientific researches:

-       spatial and urban planning (theory, methodology and planning techniques, implementation, monitoring, information systems, databases, system of indicators etc.);

-       urban revitalisation and reconstruction;

-       development and structure of rural areas;

-       sustainable development, the use of natural resources, environmental protection and ecological improvement, rational use of energy, architectural and urban heritage etc;

-       spatial development and settlement of mining, energetic, industrial, agricultural plants and tourist areas, natural resources and cultural heritages etc;

-       dormitory and public sector activities and infrastructure systems

-       application of the original "pre-fab" systems in dormitory constructions

-       protection of natural and created disasters and catastrophes.

 

2)   Design  of spatial and urban plans:

-       National (Republic’s) Spatial Plans

-       Regional Spatial Plans

-       Spatial Plans for specific purposes (tourist areas, industrial, mining and agricultural plants, water supply areas, military zones, etc.)

-       Spatial Plans for infrastructural networks

-       Urban Master Plans for cities and settlements

-       Detailed and urban  regulatory Plans

-       Requirements for spatial settlements including Urban and Technical conditions for the accompanying design and construction documentations.

-       Integral Development Plans, Sustainable development Strategies

-       Programmes for construction and  spatial arrangements

-       The needs analysis for acceptable Spatial and Urban Plans modified in accordance with defence requirements; protection against war effects and natural disasters.

3)   Elaboration of architectural and urban projects for building and spatial areas (Feasibility Studies, projects,                 Environmental Impact Analysis, expertise on supervision and stakeholders investments)

-       Dormitories and residential areas

-       Public buildings and business areas (administrative, cultural, educational, medical, commercial, sports, traffic etc.)

-       Industrial zones and agricultural plants

-       Networks and objects of public infrastructure (ground floor structure)

-       Landscape Planning of the open areas and other

 

4)      Consultancy, engineering, export of intellectual services, publishing and information technology support.

 

The recent period of political, economic and social instability in the country and the region had negative impacts on the Institute’s working conditions and business relations.  However, its ambitious plans including the management of human resources and the focus on scientific researches helped the Institute to overcome this turbulent period.  Further more, the Institute initiated several long term projects, the most important among them being The Spatial Plan of Republic of Serbia.

Besides the commissioned scientific researches, available human resources and the scientific expertise, the Institute identifies other significant scopes of work and new trends for the future.

B)  REGIONAL  PROJECTS  (1980 – 2001.)

In the recent years, the experts from the Institute (B.Stojkov, M.Vujosevic, M.Pucar, K.Petovar, R.Malobabic, D.Dabic, O.Dzelabdzic) took active part in preparations of several international regional projects (Vision Planet, ESTIA, Alpe Adria ...) either by  realisation of the projects or by participating in  international conferences dedicated to these projects.

Many of the Institute specialists (D.Toskovic, D.Perisic, M.Vujosevic, B.Milosavljevic, N.Spasic, S.Mitrovic, N.Manojlovic and others...) have led expert teams  or consultants engaged in the elaboration of numerous regional and urban plans all over the world:

(Libya -consultations, regional and masters plans, Tanzania- regional and master plans, India -Master plan for New Calcutta, Yemen - consultations, Zambia - consultations, Algeria - master plans and projects for dormitories, Nigeria - regional and master plan using Cano methodology, Guinea Bissau - consultations, regional and masters plans,  Lebanon -regional and master plans, Angola  -regional and master plan for Luanda, working project),   Cabot Verde-consultations and masters plans), etc.

The Institute plans to establish National Focal Point for the international cooperation in architecture, urban and spatial planning

Although there was a lack of invested constructions in the country at the time, the Institute produced several important projects, some of which received significant awards and acknowledgements:

1)            Dormitory – business centre  King Aleksandar Bulevar (arch. M.Marusic, Prof. D. Marusic), certificate and annual award of the Serbian Association of Architects in 1999/ 2000.

2)     Dormitory - business centre in the city of Novi Sad (Arch. M.Marusic, Prof. D.Marusic) awarded by newspaper "Borba" as the best architectural achievement in Yugoslavia in 1998

3)     Preliminary design for the international ECO- CENTRES in Becici, 1996 (I.Maric, M. Pucar); certified by the Academies of Sciences and Arts, Serbia and Montenegro.

4)     Master Project for the Sports Hall in the city of Smederevo (10 000m2) (arch. S.Djilas)
